Highly responsible and specialized work flying helicopters to perform inspections, larviciding, adulticiding, and other aviation support functions to facilitate the operations of the Mosquito Control Division.
Illustrative Duties:
(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
Pilots helicopter in making systematic inspections of County salt marshes and other
producing areas for the presence of mosquito larvae.
When not performing air operations may operate airboat and work in conjunction with
ground inspection personnel to coordinate inspections adjacent to salt marshes, spoil islands and other areas inaccessible to aircraft.
Performs aerial application of insecticide to control adult mosquitoes in and around
residential areas during the hours of darkness.
Applies larvicide sprays to eliminate mosquito larvae in the salt marshes and other breeding sites.
Completes and submits larviciding and adulticiding forms and maps to the Airborne
Operations Supervisor.
Performs required pre-flight equipment inspections to assure safe operation. Performs routine aircraft cleaning.
Assists in aircraft maintenance under the supervision of the Airborne Operations Supervisor or Aircraft Mechanic.
Functions as division safety officer.
Responsible for devising and implementing safety programs, procedures and inspections.
Conducts periodic safety inspections and spot checks job sites for proper safety procedures.
Responsible for distribution of completed safety inspection check list through Supervisor and to appropriate site supervisors.
Ensures all applicable state and federal safety regulations are followed.
Prepares and conducts monthly safety meetings.
Responsible for updates to division safety plan.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.. Minimum flight experience of 1500 hours in helicopters with 150 hours in McDonnell Douglas 500 Model Helicopter or other turbine powered helicopters. Possess and maintain a Commercial Pilot's License with rotorcraft, instrument helicopter rating. Rotorcraft spraying experience is preferred.
Must meet all FAA requirements. Possession of current class II flight physical. Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
Must, within six (6) months of appointment, be examined and certified in Public Health Pest Control and in Aerial Application of Pesticides.
Assignments to this position require successful completion of a one (1) year probationary period.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of the operation of the aircraft to which assigned.
Knowledge of FAA rules,
regulations and controls relating to the operation of helicopters.
Knowledge of Volusia County geography, incorporated and non-incorporated areas.
Ability to operate the assigned aircraft in accordance with department rules and procedures.
Ability to pass acceptance check flights.
Ability to react promptly and effectively in emergency situations.
Ability to make
independent decisions with minimum of supervision and under stress in non-routine
situations.
Ability to carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate
effectively both in writing and orally.
Skill in piloting helicopters in varying weather conditions, both day and night.
Skill in completing flight operation logs and other aircraft flight documentation.
Skill in conducting pre- and post flight aircraft inspections.

Physical Demands: Light to medium work. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, see, hear, stoop, crouch, feel, handle; manual dexterity.
Environmental Demands: Outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including rain, humidity, cold, heat. May be exposed to dust, fumes, odors and chemicals, confined spaces.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and instructions; procedures, safety instructions, memos, reports. Ability to write at a level to relay data,
details and information. Ability to perform shop math. Ability to speak clearly and concisely to relay information.
