Job Description:
The Chief Pilot reports to the Director of Operations and is responsible for the oversight and management of the Flight Department. This position requires a high level of expertise in regulatory compliance, personnel management, policies, processes, and standard operating procedures. In conjunction with upper management, the individual will continue development of policies, procedures, and systems to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards as well as efficiency of operations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • In conjunction with the Director of Operations ensures that all activities of the flight department, including flight operations, personnel, and equipment comply with all regulatory standards, company policies, pertinent operating manuals, practices and procedures.
  • Coordinates duties with the Director of Maintenance and Director of Operations, to ensure that all flight operations are compliant with the Federal Aviation Regulations and the General Operations Manual.
  • Participate in employee recruiting, conduct personnel interviews, periodic evaluations, handles employer or employee complaints or suggestion and takes appropriate disciplinary action, in accordance with company policies and in coordination with the Director of Human Resources.
  • Ensures the currency and qualifications of company pilots and provides for coordination and scheduling of any necessary recurrent training and qualification checks.
  • Ensures that all training and checking requirements for flight crew members are completed and documented in accordance with company policies and procedures prior to their assignment to duty.
  • Develops, coordinates, and maintains records on all aspects of flight crew training, both ground and flight, and ensures compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations and our company training program.
  • Establishes flight crew schedules and duty hours and audits flight and duty times to ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations.
  • Ensures flight crews adhere to the company policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for establishing, maintaining, and conducting training procedures to ensure safety and proficiency of flight operations.
  • Maintain company pilot in command status in company aircraft.
  • Liaison with the FAA and other regulatory and non-regulatory agencies or companies on all matters concerning compliance within the flight department.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of collaboration at all levels.
  • Travel to operations bases on a semi regular basis.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all company and personnel related matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ability to effectively interact and tactfully communicate with various Regulatory Agencies personnel, both in person and in writing.
  • Must be able to read, write and understand safety plans, Federal Aviation Regulations, Operations Specifications, Operations Manuals, Training Manuals, and Procedures Manuals.
  • Must be able to effectively operate the company’s computer based applications/software and tracking programs, to include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Must maintain lofty standards of performance for self and others; demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement in all aspects of the business; monitor, provide leadership to as well as coach and mentor the operations team.

Education and Experience: 

  • Must have a thorough working knowledge and understanding of FARs.
  • Experience in medium Bell and Astar helicopters preferred.
  • Previous Check Airman experience preferred.
  • Experience in Alaska utility with precision sling work preferred.
  • Previous Director of Operations or Chief Pilot experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and must meet the company’s vehicle insurance requirements.
