Job Title:  Chief Pilot

Job description: 

The Air Support Unit (ASU) of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office in Washington State provides airborne Law Enforcement, Search & Rescue and Firefighting capabilities to Snohomish County and the region.  The ASU promotes a strong Safety Culture through regular, rigorous training and top-notch aircraft maintenance.  The Cascade Mountains and Pacific Northwest weather prove to be challenging and extensive mountain flying experience is a must in this environment.  Our Helicopter Rescue Team (HRT) is recognized nationally and world-wide as a highly skilled, professional level mountain rescue organization that operates with safety as a top priority.   We operate a significantly upgraded Bell UH-1H plus -703 engine with external rescue hoist and a Hughes 500 equipped with FLIR, Churchill Navigation, Trakkabeam and Video Downlink.

Job Duties:

  • Oversee the ASU Safety Program and the assigned Aviation Safety Officer.
  • Manage the ASU Training program to include pilots, Tactical Flight Officers, crewchiefs, rescue technicians, flight medics, and ground support team.  Manage aircrew training records.
  • Oversee the ASU aircraft maintenance program by coordinating all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance with aircraft maintenance contractors.  Ensure aircraft maintenance contracts are renewed.
  • Manage ASU Flight Operations to include composing monthly flight schedules, aircrew schedules, and training events.  Ensure Air Support coverage 24/7.
  • Manage the ASU annual flight hour program and ensure that all aircraft fuel and maintenance costs are within the assigned budget.
  • Coordinate and complete federal grant applications when they become available and are applicable to ASU operations and equipment.
  • Oversee the county Unmanned Aircraft Systems program and manage the Sheriff’s Office UAS program.
  • Perform duties as the Subject Matter Expert in all matters relating to aviation and federal Public Use operations for the Snohomish County Sheriff and Snohomish County administration.  Report directly to the ASU Supervisor.
  • Maintain proficiency in both assigned Sheriff’s Office helicopters to include rescue hoist ops, water bucket ops, NVG ops, snow landings, confined area ops, mountain ops, short haul ops, search ops.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with all local, state, federal and military aviation partners in the region.
  • Plan, organize and conduct joint training drills with local first responder agencies.
  • Conduct regular meetings and training sessions on a variety of aviation and safety related subjects.

Minimum Qualifications/Skills/Experience

  • FAA issued rotorcraft – helicopter commercial pilot certificate.
  • Current FAA Class II medical
  • Minimum 1500 hours PIC turbine helicopter
  • Minimum 300 hours PIC mountain (helicopter)
  • Minimum 150 hours PIC NVG time.
  • Basic MS Word and Excel computer skills.

Additional Qualifications/Skills Experience (not required but preferred)

  • FAA Instrument-Helicopter rating
  • FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate
  • Helicopter Rescue Hoist operations experience
  • Water bucket/firefighting  experience
  • Vertical reference experience

Full time Chief Pilot position will be opening June 1, 2018.  Applicant must reside within Snohomish County at the time of hire.  Train-up time will commence prior to June 1, 2018.  Individual selected for the position will be given ample train-up time in both aircraft, unit operations, training program, maintenance program and safety program. Final selection process will involve a flight evaluation in mountainous terrain. Flexibility in being available during the train-up time is a plus.
